good advice - wish i found it sooner. i've been constantly struggling with broken ruby/gem installations, having mixed the frozen debian repository installation material with the up to date gem material.

on debian and similar distro's, you've basically got two competing and occasionally incompatible code repositories mixing together unless you do ruby & gems from source release -- it's only a matter of time before it breaks

Thanks for your informative article on Hamilton C shell. It sounds like a great product.

I use unxutils http://unxutils.sourceforge.net/. It is a reasonable alternative.

I figured out the shortcut issue. I just ran the program as an administrator and then was able to save my font preferences successfully. I ran it again as my regular user without admin rights and it worked great.

I'm delighted you liked my work, Rob. I'm a real person and I really care about making people happy. Thank you.

You usually can mash together options without separate minuses, just like on UNIX. But ls is a special case because it lets you do set arithmetic (adding and subtracting sets of files/directories) you want listed. You'll get the extended help for ls that explains this as "ls -hx".

I'm not sure why you're having trouble editing the properties for the shortcut. Perhaps we can take this up offline.

Again, thank you very much for your kind words. You made my day!

I can fix that omission you picked out, the lack of a good UNIX-style shell on Vista, if you like. I'm the author of Hamilton C shell (http://www.hamiltonlabs.com/cshell.htm), a complete recreation from scratch of the UNIX C shell and utilities for Windows. I just released a new version (including a new 64-bit build) for Vista this summer. If you'd like to post your impressions, just so long as you promise to tell the truth, good or bad, love it or hate it, just exactly as you see it, it's yours.
